HTC Dot View
My role: Software Product Manager
Brief
HTC Dot View is HTC’s first successful phone case that turning the accessory department from deficit to profits. With unique interaction between software and the dotted case, Dot View case brings users a convenient and cool experience.
My Responsibility
As the software features manager, I am responsible to keep shipping new features and functions that increase the sale. In the meanwhile, I was in charge of the user experience, engineering resource arrangement, features implementation and roadmap planning.
Challenges
I have to lead the team to conquer 3 major challenges:
- Constantly shipped new software features appealing to consumers
- Maintained the desirable user experience with complicated interactions.
- Limited resource in engineering and marketing.
What did I do?
To shorten the developing time and create functions that meet market needs, I initiated the closely communication among multidisciplines, including marketing, engineering and user experience research team. I let the marketing team to participate in early developing stage so they can provide their insights from market’s perspectives. In addition, I led the engineers and designers to work together, so we can adjust the design immediately. Besides, once features are completed, I asked the user research team to conduct user trials so we know if any bugs or bad user experience.
Different from other software product manager, I actively cooperated with accessory team to come up with marketing plan, persuading local marketing to allocate resource on the Dot View cases by supporting localized features, such as holiday themes, which earn the favor from user globally.
Finally, the software successfully helped the Dot View case keep its fever among consumers and brings the great profits to the company.
Outcome
The top manager decided to ship Dot View 2 case because of the popularity. Also, the Dot View 2 case was listed as key product for marketing team in MWC, 2014.
